Thanks! I've never used hdparm before, so I'm not sure what to poke. Here
are the current settings. Any suggestions on changes?

$ sudo hdparm /dev/sda /dev/sdb

/dev/sda: [the WD Red drive]
 multcount     = 16 (on)
 IO_support    =  1 (32-bit)
 readonly      =  0 (off)
 readahead     = 256 (on)
 geometry      = 364801/255/63, sectors = 5860533168, start = 0

/dev/sdb: [the SSD RAID 1 on 3ware card]
 HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(identify) failed: Invalid argument
 readonly      =  0 (off)
 readahead     = 256 (on)
 geometry      = 116712/255/63, sectors = 1874978816, start = 0
