I would use "document formats" instead of "file formats", as that is
what we are primarily interested in (as opposed to audio, video, data
dumps from the Apollo program etc.)

I guess 5-6 can be called "many", but I would prefer to use "various" or
similar vague term. Note that there is also at least one closed source
application (a CorelDRAW viewer for OS X).

I think "or" should be used here instead of "and".

I would prefer to change the last clause to something like "... or
learn how you can contribute to the effort." There are more ways to
contribute than by writing code.
