I have just released NeoOffice 1.2 Alpha. This release, which is
the result of the last 5 months of development and testing by the
NeoOffice developers and testers, is based on the OpenOffice.org
1.1.5 release. It includes all of the features in the June 2005
NeoOffice/J 1.1 release plus the following new features:
- Importing OpenOffice.org 2.0 documents - In October 2005,
OpenOffice.org released OpenOffice.org 2.0. OpenOffice.org 2.0
added a new file format called the Open Document Format (ODF) that
was not supported in previous versions of NeoOffice. Since it will
require several months of work for us to upgrade NeoOffice to use
the OpenOffice.org 2.0 code, this release includes the ability to
import ODF files so that NeoOffice users will be able to read files
created by OpenOffice.org 2.0 users.
- Improved stability and performance - In previous versions,
NeoOffice ran natively by using a combination of Apple's Java 1.3.1
and Carbon APIs. Unfortunately, Apple has been devoting most of its
engineering resources to enhancing and improving other APIs. In
this release, NeoOffice runs natively using a combination of
Apple's Java 1.4.x and Cocoa APIs. By using these actively
supported Apple APIs, NeoOffice now benefits from Apple's many
stability and performance improvements that are not available in
Java 1.3.1 and Carbon.
- Printing of EPS images - In previous versions, NeoOffice did not
support printing of Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) images. By
switching to Apple's Java 1.4.x and Cocoa APIs, this release now
supports this OpenOffice.org feature.
- Accessibility support - In previous versions, NeoOffice did not
any of the OpenOffice.org accessibility features. By switching to
Apple's Java 1.4.x and Cocoa APIs, this release now supports all of
OpenOffice.org accessibility features.
