The beauty of jQuery is that all the nasty, cross-browser incompatibility stuff is kept under the hood. Even if the next ECMA standard horribly breaks existing Javascript implementations - which surely it won't, any more than Adobe would release a backwards-incompatible version of Flash - the jQ library could be rewritten to accommodate it so that all our $(...) statements work as before.
