Under RFC 2695, a user-agent (such as a Web browser) should provide “at least 4096 bytes per cookie” – so the 4KB is a minimum for storage – not a maximum. See: http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2965 (section 5.3).

I never really worked with cookies, therefore I'm not sure if those
methods would have any practical use at all.


Cookies are limited to 4KB of data I believe, so they might be useful for short pieces of text like user preferences and such.
