I ended up installing the thinkfinger package, it wasn't that difficult 
after all and it worked out of the box :) Then I booted up the laptop 
freshly, echoed 'auto' to the sysfs file, waited a few seconds, then 
switched to a different tty, tried logging in and it worked.
