You are right. Anyway, I've been told that on the Harpertown quad core, there are 2 L2 caches on the die shared by 2 cores each. That would mean that the topology is more complex than physical core ID can express. This may not be important for the power savings in this particular case, but it can harm performance if the scheduler isn't aware of it.
