I have noticed that it does not seem to work in Firefox, at least in /some/ circumstances.
Works reliably for me in Firefox, even when a single click in the URL bar highlights the entire URL, it does not invoke the X11 "copy" until I double-click to select.
Maybe we're experiencing different behaviours?
Something like that might be part of what is messing with you.
I wonder if Wayland is interfering with this critical feature? Does it (can it?) support this? I sure hope so.
