Hi,
Great effort, thanks Toby!
The text makes valid points. However, to me it looks like a lot of the caveats
with using chatbots in the text revolve around the unreliability of the answers
provided by chatbots. I feel that, at the level of our beginner’s lessons, this
already is no longer a problem, or very soon will stop being a problem.
In my teaching, I emphasize differentiating between using chatbots to provide
answers and solve problems for you, versus using chatbots as a learning
assistant. The first approach is very practical but does not result in much
learning. The second approach can be very helpful for learning.
For example, if you want to learn from your error message, ask the chatbot for
help understanding it. Perhaps even say ‘do not provide me with a direct
answer, but start a dialogue where you ask me what I understand and do not
understand, ask follow-up questions and only provide an answer if I am
completely stuck.’

is to me not very helpful as I think it takes longer time and can be more
frustrating to sift through the search results, while asking a chatbot is just
as helpful for a fraction of the effort.
Best,
Lex
