(With apologies to those who receive this on multiple lists.)

This month I am hosting a couple of community discussion sessions to explore
what should be covered in a (currently hypothetical) “AI Carpentry” workshop
teaching an introduction to implementing machine learning/deep
learning/artificial intelligence methods in software.

The goal is to bring together members of The Carpentries community who are
interested in contributing to the creation of new workshops teaching machine
learning methods. The sessions will be particularly relevant to community
members with experience of or interest in lesson development and familiarity
with machine learning.

Session dates & times (follow links for your local time):
1. Monday 21 July, 10:00 UTC
<https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?msg=AI+Carpentry+Curriculum+Discussion&iso=20250721T10>
2. Wednesday 30 July, 19:00 UTC
<https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?msg=AI+Carpentry+Curriculum+Discussion&iso=20250730T19>

Sign up on the etherpad <https://pad.carpentries.org/community-sessions-2025>
to participate.

A note to emphasise that these sessions are about a workshop to teach the
implementation of AI methods in software, as opposed to the application of
existing (gen)AI tools for software development. The latter will be the topic
of a separate set of community sessions next month*.

Thanks,

Toby

*Footnote: I am aware of ethical concerns held by some members of the community
about the teaching of LLM usage, as summarised in a blog post earlier in the
year
<https://carpentries.org/blog/2025/02/the-ethics-of-teaching-llms-in-carpentries-workshops/>.
 To be honest, I share many of those concerns. But I have become increasingly
convinced that the greatest impact that The Carpentries can have in the context
of increasingly widespread adoption of genAI coding tools is in helping
researchers who code make informed choices about their use and avoid the
biggest hazards, rather than advocating for abstinence. More on this in a
future blog post. Please get in touch <mailto:[email protected]> or
schedule a call with me (link in signature) if you want to discuss this.
