with sendmail, there are 2 main ways of working with the sendmail.cf ...

basic configuration for most servers in most cases can be:

edit sendmail.cf and modify the line beginning "DS" to add your real mail
host
edit /etc/mail/aliases to add aliases for "root" to your email address, and
run newaliases.

modify the mc files in /etc/mail/cf/cf and run "make" to convert them into
sendmail.cf files to add options you want in order to add LDAP, domain
masquerading, etc. and then copy the resulting sendmail.cf to /etc/mail.

make sure that in your /etc/hosts file you have a fully qualified domain
name for your host to get it running.
