It falls in the it "sort of works" bucket. 

I am running OmniOS succesfully on a SmartOS host. I've also run SmartOS
in KVM for testing (on SmartOS). 

ide + e1000 nic + nousb work best, vioblk also works but the installer
for OmniOS does not handle that one. 

After install it is possible (recently) to swap out the e1000 nic for a
virtio one, those are now also working very well.
The main problem is the USB host in all my KVM's. Not using USB on the
qemu side is the easiest fix. 

But yeah, it could use some improvements to make it "just work".
