For those not following twitter or the like, I've recently been doing some oddball experiments with illumos, which I've written up in blog posts.
One experiment was to see how small a memory footprint I can get a properly packaged and managed distribution into. (Hint: don't use ZFS or IPS...) http://ptribble.blogspot.co.uk/2015/09/how-low-can-tribblix-go.html Then I wondered if it was possible to actually boot the bits from illumos without any additional software. As in illumos, the whole of illumos, and nothing but illumos. http://ptribble.blogspot.co.uk/2015/09/illumos-pureboot.html The use of hypervisors or emulators is common for development in the x86 world. Development on SPARC is hindered by lack of hardware, but some emulators exist - although they aren't yet usable. http://ptribble.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/fun-with-sparc-emulators.html Most recently, I was taking some of the minimization ideas and wondering just how minimal a bootable illumos instance you can make that still runs a real application. (For orientation, search for Unikernels or Library Operating Systems.) http://ptribble.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/minimal-viable-illumos.html And, as a reminder, there are other places to be involved, for example: https://www.reddit.com/r/illumos/ http://planetillumos.org/ -- -Peter Tribble http://www.petertribble.co.uk/ - http://ptribble.blogspot.com/ ------------------------------------------- illumos-discuss Archives: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/182180/=now RSS Feed: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/rss/182180/21175430-2e6923be Modify Your Subscription: https://www.listbox.com/member/?member_id=21175430&id_secret=21175430-6a77cda4 Powered by Listbox: http://www.listbox.com
