Why not just move your /var/tmp to the dpool?

Seems to me that is a better solution. In any event, I stand by my earlier
comments — changing the global default for illumos is not a good idea IMO.

Actually, I would like to do migrate my boot environments on rpool to my existing dpool which is an EFI whole disk pool.

I seem to remember seeing that this is now possible.

Is there any documented procedure on how to do that safely with a populated dpool?

In the meanwhile, I also up'd the swap size on dpool 'cause I noticed gnome/mozilla was also abusing /var/tmp... so I put in a TMPDIR=/tmp... in my .xinitrc and /var/tmp is now empty (yeah!) a bit more pep as well;-)

I also have a patchset for pkgsrc to set TMPDIR, particularly useful
now when WRKOBJDIR îs set to be under "/tmp" (among other reasons).

cheers
