Well, this is typical, after optimizing I have even more kernel memory 
consumption.

Now it goes over 56%  after ditching my slow Intel SSD on rpool booting directly
from dpool and yet only using TMPDIR=/tmp for compiler, /var/tmp for out of 
tree pkgsrc bulkbuilds... didn't try again the atime biz yet.

and my system started hanging again, which it only did when building clang
while having everything in /tmp.

Is there some tuneable to free things up a bit faster?  seems that the kernel
should operate somewhat like zfs and coalesce free'd buffers when needed.

I know I could throw another 32G of ram at things (already @32G) but it looks
now like that will have to wait until after the holidays.
