I was swithching to VT consoles and I had X graphical session
duying witha ll apps, but I think it is unrelated, because it
behaved like that before X died.

I can reproduce behavour by starting 'sudo prstat' in gnome-terminal
window and closing window before closing prstat.
It keeps running as root and after a while it's cpu use grows till the
point it is noticable. (at first 37%, then 50%, e.g. 100% of one core).
