Actually I was around this to let an ERP company run their software on our
XStreamOS illumos distro.
Problem is their cobol runtime is for Linux and/or Solaris-sparc.
Maybe this has no lower level calls?
I'll make tests and let you know ;)
Gabriele.

Re: [discuss] Linux binray compatibility
I was an "advisor" on this project. The idea was to shim ld.so to replace
certain symbols, with a little bit of wrapper to match to illumos symbols. We
believed that there were a substantial number of programs that could be fixed
to operate this way. Of course programs making direct syscalls (bad practice!)
would be busted, but things that just relied on libc might be made to work.
There are of course questions about the 18-gazillion other libraries. GUI
libraries would probably work fine, since they should have the same symbols and
calling conventions on illumos. But callers of other lower level libraries
might be more difficult. The same approach could be used for those libraries,
but identification of them all was thought to be a non-trivial effort.

I noticed the project is not updated since 2 years, I'll have a look if it has
something interesting.
It would be interesting for cases where you can't run lx zones but you need to
run closed source
linux binaries.
