Hoping to get a few ideas how to debug a problem I'm having in fairly
new install from openindian 151a7 which is an illumos product too I
guess.
In fact, I'm pretty sure I need some coaching on how to begin to
isolate what is causing this. My puny efforts haven't revealed a thing
that I can see how to debug with.
On initial install the 'time-slider' service failed with something to
do with no being able to access crontab:
[ Jul 28 19:51:52 Disabled. ]
[ Jul 28 19:51:52 Rereading configuration. ]
[ Jul 30 00:43:52 Disabled. ]
[ Aug 4 02:51:53 Enabled. ]
[ Aug 4 02:51:53 Executing start method ("/lib/svc/method/time-slider
start"). ]
crontab: can't open your crontab file.
[...]
But later on (I don't know why) it started working and was creating
the timed auto snapshots.
It's now disabled and in 'maintenance' state. I can not seem to find
out why:
Output here indicates the log to look in but it reveals nothing I can
work with to debug the problem. Or maybe its just that I'm not
capable or recognizing the clues.
svcs -xb time-slider:
svc:/application/time-slider:default (GNOME Desktop Snapshot Management
Service)
State: maintenance since August 13, 2013 05:22:54 PM EDT
Reason: Start method failed repeatedly, last died on Killed (9).
See: http://illumos.org/msg/SMF-8000-KS
See: man -M /usr/share/man -s 1M zfs
See: /var/svc/log/application-time-slider:default.log
Impact: 5 dependent services are not running:
svc:/system/filesystem/zfs/auto-snapshot:daily
svc:/system/filesystem/zfs/auto-snapshot:frequent
svc:/system/filesystem/zfs/auto-snapshot:hourly
svc:/system/filesystem/zfs/auto-snapshot:monthly
svc:/system/filesystem/zfs/auto-snapshot:weekly
Checking out the log ... (Posted at the end)
But also that output indicates I can get something useful here:
http://illumos.org/msg/SMF-8000-KS
The action advocated there is to:
"Determine why the service's start method failed. Consult the
service's log file, [...]"
But that log is not helpful as seen in the sample at the end.
There is another bit on that html page that really looks like it might
lead to some actual clues:
"If the above Action doesn't help, use the instructions in document
203634 to place svc.startd in debug mode and contact your service
provider."
Except that the link '203634' is broken. Its supposed to lead here:
http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-61-203634-1&searchclause=203634
But, apparently that whole setup has left town...
I think I need a really basic plan that even a dope like me can
follow, to track down what the problem is.
Seems like the logs ought to be a little more helpful, and at least
have live links to help.
I took the time to search svcadm man page for any evidence or mention
of 'debug' but there is none.
The one svcs cmd (-xv) that is said to be `Verbose debugging
information', doesn't tell me a enough to get a toehold toward finding
the problem.

post concerning accessing my crontab.
