I would for now actually dislike to see that ExpressCard support disappear since it is actually still contemporary way of adding external high speed devices (external graphics etc).
(Someone talking about adding Thunderbolt (2) and USB3 support?)

There are reasons that ExpressCard died. Those reasons are mostly USB. :-)
Well, ExpressCard did not die (not the same as PC Card). It is contemporary way of using external PCIExpress for external devices for graphics cards and others. It IS present in at least all a bit higher class laptops.
This was like me saying: "please don't remove it". - Don't kill that too :)

Related to that, About Smart Card readers, I would be strongly against ditching Smart card reader drivers, like Solaris11 ditched them (I know they are not related with PCCard/PCMCIA and that they differ). Smart cards are used on modern credit cards, personal ID cards and e-banking cards for identification, containing signing certificates and for network identification while logging in. I would not like for that support for Smart Card to go away any time soon from illumos. We need that in any application of illumos desktop/headless implementation for identification in foreseeable future.

How hard it is to have older stuff supported anyway - Does it make much trouble?

Basically, you're advocating keeping the crufty support while admitting you have such hardware lying around, but don't use it. :-)
I am just being honest and you wanted usage feedback - and you got it.
You were right that older hardware is not much used anymore, same as hardware that it it attached to is not much used etc.

I appreciate your insights and steering.
I am advocating remove it if you must, in a way that would hurt less those who maybe want to use it later, in some separate place for removed things.

BTW, Where are Illumos releases (versioned)? Like "This is the last release supporting 'this and that'".
"This is the first release to support this new things" etc.
I miss that not only to be able to reference it, but also to be able to introduce other people to what Illumos is.

I think that's a good example of why we should not be making decisions to keep this stuff if it costs *anything* to keep it.
I am just saying, there is very frequent use of the SmardCards for identification, and that it should not be in any even distant plans to remove thet, too, like Solaris11 did. It is contemporary and it is very frequently and widely used for identification. I just hope there is no need for that.

Btw, thank you for sharing decisions reasoning with the community, it is great I hope for you too :)
