I'd agree, and its easier to debug, too. That's one of the reasons why
I have some violent opposition to the concept of the boot archive
here.

Do you have any idea what changed code-wise which made booting from a
NFS root impossible? What was the last Solaris release which supported
NFS roots, and is there an exact description how to setup a NFS root
*without* the diskless client scripts for Solaris (I don't have access
to such scripts, or at least don't know where they can be found on a
Solaris 10 DVD)?

As a random thought, I'd dig in the scripts of the install-client
(you can setup an install/netboot server from Solaris install media,
so it apparently includes the netbooted client side).
Also you might have to look in Solaris 8 or 9 media/ISOs for such
inspiration, as they didn't IIRC have the miniroots at all. But no
GRUB either...
