You may add an additional category: Intel Optane DC 4801
No cache, no trim or erase prior write required, powerloss protection,
(500k write iops, ultra low latency, simply the fastest)
Usually you need the cache on regular flash disks to keep write
performance high. You need plp then to avoid dataloss or data corruption
on a power outage during a write.
btw
for regular filer use you do not need an slog

I have a ZIL/Slog composed of a mirrored-pair of Intel DC P3700 SSDs,
which have power loss protection (PLP).
I’m interested in obtaining some SSDs for a zpool storing “hot data”
(web, email, etc.) separate from another zpool for “cool data” (large
media files, backups, etc.). I plan to partition the 400GB P3700 and
use half for each zpool.
For the SSDs, there appears to be roughly three categories:
1) DRAM-less
2) DRAM w/o PLP
3) DRAM w/ PLP
It seems that DRAM-less might be best, so that the drives don’t lie to
the ZIL about having persisted data to the NAND, right?
Some might say that category (3) are the best drives, but wouldn’t all
their fancy features be redundant in this application, and it would be
cheaper to centralize the PLP-function than having it in each drive
the the zpool?
Thanks,
Kent
