I use Triton, so it handles all of that for me. SmartOS has a SMF service that
reads certain metadata from the zone, among them a user script that runs on
boot. I use that to bootstrap chef. I’ll probably set that up differently later
to have salt bootstrap the node in chef so that I don’t need to keep track of
nodes’ chef identities so I can reprovision them.
salt also speaks cloud-init natively, so it’s easier for me to integrate there.
