Hi,

for an upcoming house renovation I am thinking about the computer network I
should build there. We are talking here about a 3 floor + cellar house,
incoming network is fiber, which arrives in the cellar. I plan to have here an
own router and run cat6 or cat 7 ethernet cable to the router/AP of each floor.
I suppose I could setup wifi mesh and or roaming using openwrt to cover the
whole house and the garden.

So the main router should have a WAN port + 1 LAN port  for each floor + 1 for
the garden + 1 for the NAS, alltogether at least 6 LAN port + a WAN port.

I am wondering, If I could use a "yet-to-be-built" NAS with Illumos (Omni or
SmartOS) as a main router,  as my current one mostly idle with 0.1 load, so it
should be able to act as a router, but I have no experience with this kind of
setup.

My general idea is to build a computer with at least 2 full size PCIe port, one
for a HBA and the other one for a 4+ port network card or maybe 2 card to cover
the port requirements. The integrated LAN (2,5G or better) should take care
about the WAN, then pass the LAN card to a zone / VM. I assume I shouldn't do
routing in the GZ. Then apply VLANs and firewall rules, set up SMB shares, and
other things.

Or am I supposed to use a high-throughput LAN port instead and delegate the
task to a switch?

What are the traps? Is this a sane idea at all?

Right now I have a much smaller network built around an OpenWRT router/AP + an
OmniOS NAS, so I don't have the practical experience.

Some background info: I plan to have a workshop/lab in the cellar, with all the
infra running there. I need only ~ everyday (youtube + web + chat + mailing)
connectivitiy on the first and on the second floor, but I'd like to have a
home-office space in the attic, so we need proper wired networking there. Our
everyday  work consist connecting to citrix / RDP, downloading files, a 1G line
should suffice for the next couple of years I suppose.

How would you build this network?

Thanks for your insights.

Best Regards,
