[Originally sent to illumos-announce] Hello everyone,
Last Friday was a bank holiday in Germany. On the "long" weekend, the first "illumos summit Germany" took place at the "Linux-Hotel" in Essen, Germany. The event was not publicly announced in advance since we wanted to try out if and how something like this would work. We covered many topics. Here is a small selection: - Status of the "OpenIndiana Association" (toasterson) - Presentation of a strategy for systems provisioning on OpenIndiana, OmniOS and FreeBSD (toasterson), for more information see: https://github.com/Toasterson/installer - current developments for Bhyve on illumos and FreeBSD (woodstock), for details see his presentation at EuroBSDCon - Discussions on how to bring illumos-based systeme to potential users; an idea ist to provide "easily installable" VM-images for Linux KVM, VirtualBox, Proxmox, etc. (or easily found documentation and how-tos if such images already exist) - Which events do we want to attend as an "illumos team" next year? Notable international events are FOSDEM and EuroBSDCon. Meetings held in German include the GUUG-FFG, FrOSCon, Chemnitzer Linux-Tage and events in Austria. Details, especially calls for participation, will be published here well in advance. - More public relations for illumos? Ideas: + Podcasts + join online events like "Bhyve production user call", "BSD Now", "ZFS production user call", "Jails & Zones" call etc. + MERCHANDISE!! + illumos flyer (both PDF and handout) + an OpenIndiana account @ Mastodon Hacking was not neglected either: We successfully installed the OpenIndiana SPARC build that klausz has intensively worked on for the last few weeks on SPARC hardware set up locally. Using the kernel debugger, Woodstock, klausz and olbohlen caught an annoying bug. The current image already contains the fix and can be found here: https://dlc.openindiana.aurora-opencloud.org/SPARC/ This means that OpenIndiana for SPARC runs on Sun SPARC T5-2 systems! All in all, the participants enjoyed this "illumos summit". There will definitely be a similar event next year, where everyone can join. A possible date could be the GUUG-FFG in Nuremberg next March; a date in summer at a German university is also an option. Last but not least, a big "thank you" to the German Unix Users Group (GUUG)! They sponsored the costs for using the conference facilities at the venue and the daily participant charge. We appreciate it!
