This is a good topic and a good question for job interviews with interaction, visual, and other types of designers.
Here are a places where I go or things that I do: Metaphor brainstorming Architecture books Trying out lots of software, especially that recommended by other designers Cookbooks (the idea of deconstruction, garnish, aesthetics, etc.) and classes on food design Books with pictures of patterns from nature Books on visualization Museums with design exhibits of many kinds (like the Buckminster Fuller exhibit which goes on display later this month at the Whitney Museum of American Art in NYC). Technology review magazine Design magazines Talks and podcasts (like the one Bill Buxton did at CHI) Physics and science fiction braindrawing exercises Purchasing cool gadgets early (OK, I waited in line to get one of the first Newtons in New England, a sinclair ZX81, many pen devices, a NeXT computer, an iPhone, etc.) and trying them out.
