I just read an article yesterday about the "User Experience Iceberg" that looks useful in explaining the work it takes to go from point A to the pretty, friendly interface. It's not a new concept but it was new to me and the article links to slides you can download for your own presentations. It's not exactly a justification of IxD but it's a great metaphor because people know they want a useful, attractive interface but sometimes need a better understanding in how successful UI or IxD is acheived.
