Here are some collage-related techniques I have used over the years.

Traditional moodboards: Works well to inform visual design aspects of screen-based interaction. Does not really support temporal aspects (interaction flows).

Cutout animation (see webzone.k3.mah.se/k3jolo/Download/ausdr.pdf): Works well to visualize use scenarios that are difficult to express in video sketches. Downside is that they are more expensive than video sketches to make.

Example catalog (pre-produced collection of distinctive examples within the design genre at hand; see webzone.k3.mah.se/k3jolo/ visCat/): Works well if used properly to involve non-specialists in early phases of design processes, helps other stakeholders understand interaction design processes and concerns to a certain extent. Downside for non-specialist use (particularly managers) is that the catalog cards sometimes stimulate premature or unwarranted decisions based on superficial visual preference.
