I think a better way to do this would be to display the first value in the
list as a link with an indicator of total entries, if there are more than
one.
A column of values would look like this then:
Lorem ipsum
Dolor sit amet
Consectetur [+5]
Adipiscing elit [+1]
Cras lectus
Neque [+3]
A slight variant of that might be more appealing
-- using periods to indicate the additional entries. So ...
Lorem ipsum
Dolor sit amet
Consectetur .....
Adipiscing elit .
Cras lectus
Neque .
I find this a bit more readable, and in most
cases (assuming a proportional font) it will take up less space.
Of course there need to be some clear rules about
what happens when there isn't space for the
periods and the full text of the first
entry. (Perhaps there was not even space without
the periods!). I'd suggest never showing more
than 5 periods, truncating that to 3 if needed to
display the full name, otherwise using a '+' to
indicate truncation. Thus a different display,
with a narrower column, might show
Lorem ipsum ..
Dolor sit amet
Consectetur
Adipiscing el+
Cras lectus
Neque ....
Hope this helps.
