i offer a few peices of knowledge, however, not strictly data from
studies.

1. you could liken these fully functional demos as to the online
distibution of music by bands who employ a pay what you think model
for full albums, groups such as Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails are two
that i am aware of.  in both circumstances they were used to great
success.

2. Codeweavers.com have in the past used free software as a way to
entice new users over.  I am aware of at least two schemes whereby
they simply gave away their software for one day or under some
externally influenced criteria.  I know at the time they published
figures on the success of one of the schemes, but eh data eludes my
two minutes of googling...
