Ah, the good old days of software engineering... When we were at Lucent / Bell Labs in the 90's, my wife and I aspired to the job title "Distinguished Member of Technical Staff."

It's nice in that it gives people a chance to progress in their career (and earn more money/stock/status) without giving up their trade and becoming a manager.
