I had same question on certifications when I about to pass my post-graduation. One of my mentor had told me.. There is no negative side if you actually do it. Instead of knowing something on Red Hat and being certified on Red Had is two entirely different thing.
I guess, I did few of my certifications not to get better position in market place but to earn the recolonization and credibility on the subjects on which I had interest.
