The other day I was asked for my opinion on one or two desktop machines a
friend of mine was considering. They were both from newegg, and both the dell
and Lenovo equivalent machines were well, really quite spectacular for the
price. Core i7, 8G of memory, discreet graphics and 1 or 2TB of disk, and
all for less than 900 bucks. It's been a while since I ever looked, but it
appears the pre-built market has come a long way. LOTS of bang for the buck.

Here is one such system:

Last time I looked, if I were to build that today on my own I'd more than
likely be WELL above that. I of course HAVE built all of my home machines,
but it's getting harder and harder to justify doing it that way. Wow.

Something like that would likely work REAL well in any linux flavor- Ubuntu or
whatever.
