Hello all,

First off, I'm sorry if this is off-topic for discuss, I haven't seen a lot
of posts regarding employment on this mailing list. Feel free to give me
the lash off-list.

I have a close friend who has been working for a large company in
Springfield for years. His primary skillset has to do with Avaya, but he
really has the makings for a sysadmin. He has been teaching himself to
program (in php, but I wont hold it against him) to facilitate running his
personal blog. He and I have been working on his linux skills as he
self-hosts his blog and he's done rudimentary PowerShell scripting on their
Windows servers. I'd gauge him at a bit above entry-level IT, but I'm not
sure I'd hire him as an SA 2, since he's not really been in a lot of
IT-related "under fire" scenarios.

My understanding of his work environment is pretty horrendous. His boss is
nothing short of a tyrant and every time he tells me about the next story
it makes me sick to my stomach. Our latest discussion revolved around how
he's unlikely to bring up automated monitoring of their avaya network
because of the retribution he'd get from his boss from "poking in things he
shouldn't concern himself with." He spends 30-60 minutes a day manually
logging into all of their Avayas to check counters. He knows it's busy
work, he wants to automate it, but politics prevent him from innovating.

His curiosity is there, his self-discipline and work ethic is there (he was
an MP in the Army) but my understanding is that the job market in
Springfield isn't that hot when it comes to IT/Systems. If anyone knows of
a place hiring looking for a better-than-average entry-level position,
please reply to me and I'll be sure to get him in touch with you.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the noise!

Pete
