I occasionally hear about life-event type news from former colleagues this
way, but I don't otherwise get any benefit from it at all. I'll probably
delete my account when I have a moment.
I've used linkedin for three reasons:
- being able to quickly get access to contact information of people I have
worked with, but am not necessarily close to. Very convenient when you need a
reference.
- letting people know that I am looking for a new contract/job.
- more and more recruiters and employers seem to prefer a linkedin profile
than a regular resume. I suspect it is because of the common format, and the
fact that people might call you on lying about where you worked.
Having said that, their attempts of becoming facebook, and now gmail, is
getting annoying, and does indeed lower their value. As mentioned by Shrdlu,
their newest change of the contact page is potentially taking their value away
completely for me.
