I'll throw in OpenWRT as well - it's the most "open" of the options, and has a 
much wider supported hardware list:

Currently the best supported devices run the Qualcomm/Atheros AR71xx based 
chipset, which includes most Buffalo, TPLink, D-Link, Mikrotek, Meraki, and 
Ubiquiti devices. 

There's a huge list of packages that can be installed to add extra 
functionality, which can be installed due to the overlayfs and jffs2/squashfs 
formatting of the flash:

Can also be administered via SSH, with a simple text file based config scheme
