I used Slack at $job-1 and I found it to be a pretty good chat client.
I'm very skeptical that it is better than IRC for LOPSA. I wonder if
we need something "better" than IRC. The primary improvement seems to
be channel management and emoticons, neither seem that important to
me. What I think we really need is more people in the discussion.

There are a few things I'd like to investigate that might improve our
real-time, synchronous communications. Specifically, moving to a
system that support XMPP in addition to IRC. I don't want to give up
IRC because a lot of us have built our communications around it. I do
want to add more and more modern options to our chat room.

There are many (wrong-headed?) companies that block IRC, mine
included, because once-upon-a-time bots used it as a command and
control channel. XMPP is less blocked and more feature-rich than IRC.

Can you recommend any IRC/XMPP services that do both? (I know Slack
does both and from experience I know that the IRC integration is
annoying to use.)
