And that is: *If you could get your software development team to change ONE thing, what would it be?*

It's common for people in different departments to have trouble communicating. Even when everybody is invested in making the company work, developers and operations develop friction. Maybe it's because they operate on different time tables; perhaps it's a difference in priorities; or it may be something else entirely. For whatever reason, despite the industry's laudable DevOps efforts to bring together the communities (at least in workflow), over the years I've heard loud grumbling from Developers about Operations, and from Operations about Developers.

I'm a peacemaker. I like to bring people together, so they can better understand each other -- and ideally find better ways to work together. So I'm writing a two-piece set of articles for the NewRelic blog, modeled after my successful "getting clueful" series from several years ago (http://www.cio.com/article/2435259/virtualization/getting-clueful--the-series.html).

And I'd like your input.

It all comes down to this: If you could get your company's software developers to understand ONE thing about Operations, what would it be? Imagine you had a magic wand: What ONE spell would you invoke?

And the follow-up: Why did you pick that item?

It's okay if you give me more than one answer... but I am intentionally asking for Just One Thing because it makes us focus on the most important lessons.

Feel free to share anecdotes, horror stories, even success stories. Send me a private message, if you feel more comfortable doing so.

I'm aiming to write the article next week, so please blurt out your first thoughts rather than planning on writing a nice, leisurely response. Also: Let me know how to refer to you in the article; the usual format is &name, &title, &company and &location ("Esther Schindler is a senior developer at the Groovy Corporation in Scottsdale Arizona"). I don't need to quote you by name, but I do need some identifying characteristics to give the article credibility ("Esther works at a large finance company in the Southwest").

(Where else should I ask this?)
