Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I actually worked (indirectly) with SIMNET, way back when.

Mostly as part of working on the Defense Simulation Internet (DSI). The DSI
was built to allow multiple SIMNET and SIMNET-like simulators to be
networked together for training.

For example the tank simulators at Fort Knox could be connected to the
plane simulators at Mac Doug, could be connected to Apache simulators at
another site, could be connected to the forward air controller trainer at
XYZ, could be connected to some other "magic stuff" ....  and they could
all play in the same training exercise.

For instance it might even have been theoretically possible to connect all
these people together and try different tactics for something similar to
but not quite the same as "The Great SCUD hunt" during Gulf I.

I can neither confirm nor deny that some DSI/SIMNET ideas and protocols
were later adapted and used in some online gaming consoles :-)

Which is also why we have IPv6.  IPv5 was deployed as part of DSI to enable
to inter-site communications.
