If the package manager will resolve any conflicts and allow you to install the
later version without wanting to bring in too many other new packages, then
this will almost certainly work. Depending on which package manager you use
(I'm a Devuan person rather than Ubuntu, but the principle is the same for any
Debian-based distro) you should always get told what it would do to get
something installed, and you can decide whether to proceed or not.
Compiling from source is always an option on nearly every system.
