Thanks for the reply. As I said /var/log/mysql is empty. However this is
a moot point now. I uninstalled maria and installed mysql clean.

*I searched for this error (Unknown storage engine Aria) but the
solution is to remove the log from /var/log/mysql. However, that
directory is empty. If ubuntu puts that log somewhere else I
cannot find it. Can someone point me in the right direction for
resolving this? TIA.
