Sure, Go ahead. So you want some programming challenges rather than using of the GRASS application. GRASS and QGIS are all GPL. The functions of the "GRASS GIS modules" are not patented so you can copy the ideas and implement the functionability to OpenJump. I think there is no problem with what you intend to do.
