yes, it does support the ecw format, but is your "business" to go in the
erdas site, register, accept their licence, download the sdk and add the
support in gdal. This because the erdas libraries are not freely
redistributable.

Unfortunately their recent (free, as "gratis") SDKs are only provided in
binary format for Windows. If you are on Linux or Mac you must have the
old SDK that was provided by ER-mapper.
