This isn't directly related to OSGeo, but might be of interest to members
of the OSGeo community, including open source developers, designers and
other contributors.

Over the past few years, while hackathons and code sprints and other civic
technology events have grown in number around the world, there have been
very few of them in the Middle East. That may come to change in future
years, and the following event may prove to be a catalyst:

Al Jazeera is going to sponsor a civic hackathon, called Canvas, focused on
media and open source technology. This will be a bit different from other
civic hackathons in which you may have participated. It will be an
invitational hackathon - if you want to participate, you'll need to submit
an application, but if your application is accepted, it will be an
all-expenses-paid trip to Doha, Qatar for the event at the end of November.

More info on Canvas: http://canvas.aljazeera.com/
Application: http://canvas.aljazeera.com/apply/

I think the organizers are particularly interested in a diverse set of
participants from around the world, so if you know folks that might be good
candidates for participation, please forward.
