There are so many examples of close collaboration of both communities .One recent example of joining efforts was in the relief efforts following Nepal earthquake in 2015 [1] which saved thousands of lives. OSGL Kathmandu University lead by Dr Shashish Maharjan and whole team along with many students and volunteers were key in helping the recovery efforts. They have been carrying out many activities from piloting of household surveys for detail earthquake assessment all using open tools and open data. Colleagues globally joined to help from developing emergency route planner for Nepal that colleagues at Heidelberg made (Alexander Zipf et al)[2] to the various humanitarian mapping done by our labs and students globally.
GeoForAll is working closely with Humanitarian Open Street Map team. In cooperation with HOT and Missing Maps, the team led by Prof. Maria Antonia Brovelli, Dr. Marco Minghini, Dr. Monia Molinari and Dr. Aldo Torrebruno showed 200 children how to map buildings in the northernmost part of Swaziland in a project for malaria elimination[3] Yesterday I was giving a keynote for EuroGeo2017 in Amsterdam and I used this example to show how OpenSteetMap is helping communities around the world. https://www.slideshare.net/SuchithAnand/open-principles-in-geoeducation https://www.wired.com/2015/05/the-open-source-maps-that-made-rescues-in-nepal-possible/ Open data is fundamental to OSGeo and GeoForAll and our collaborations with OSM locally and globally is natural synergies.
