As Linux/BSD users, we should be well aware that it's not automatically the best solution just because it's the technology du jour and everyone's doing it. The best solution(s) are the one that work for you and your users. ;)
We make prebuilt vmware images for our product at my workplace as part of the build process. I hate it. Totally violates the intent of the build process and makes the build process more fragile.
