-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hey everybody,
Me and Ian had a meeting yesterday with Brian Szklarczuk (who I've CC'ed on this email). Brian works at the National Microbiology Laboratory on Arlington Street doing a variety of different things. Some scientists there have developed a project called ALPHA. It's designed to be a middleware product that can handle large datasets, and has been used for tracking outbreaks like SARS. They're interested in doing more with this product, and that's where we come in. What we'd like to do is have a seminar at the laboratory. It'd consist of free pizza, some talks, including a talk about the product and also cool bioinformatics talk (like 3d modelling viruses, and other nifty stuff like that), a tour of the portions of the lab that we're allowed to see, and they've even promised to bring out a hazmat suit that people can try on! Did I mention free pizza? The seminar would have no strings attached, but the idea would be to generate interest in ALPHA. With enough interest, we'd plan an actual workshop/hack-a-thon day where people could get their hands dirty and try using it to solve some kind of problem. My suggestion was that we use it to track a zombie apocalypse, and everybody seemed to think that could be a fun project. In my opinion, this would be a lot of fun. It'd also be a great way to make new contacts, to put something cool on your resume, to get to see one of the coolest buildings in Winnipeg, and, of course, to show everybody how awesome SkullSpace is. Any thoughts? Opinions? Concerns? Feel free to respond to the list, and please include Brian in your responses since I don't believe he's subscribed. If things go well, we'll pick a date in probably late November and promote it jointly with the Laboratory. Thanks!
