We have been approached by CIPS (membership of 120 or so, expect about 50 to 60
folks to show)
to host an event in our space 530pm to 700pm on Tuesday, 22 January 2013.
The CIPS organization is excited to see our space and learn about our projects.
This may be a great opportunity to piggy back a grand opening celebration
evening for the public
and put us next to Sr. IT leaders from many local companies.
Excellent, we have a real grand opening in the works with a date now
settled on.
I declare Dec 15 to be a member-focused, infrastructure hackathon
without any cheeky use of the O word. I'll kick it off early (noon, 1pm,
2pm?), with a talk on the current state of / re-launch of the VM server
and I'll be inviting folks after that to work on any of three related,
ongoing challenges:
1) Try to find security holes in my automated account claiming system
that would allow you to get more than just the account you claimed.
(system it also not open at all outside the Skullspace LAN)
Even though members have physical access and can own anything in the
space anyway (short of a well setup TPM* machine) -- the protections are
still valuable against an adversary that isn't physically present, but
has access to the private LAN, such as via a member or or guest's
infected laptop/smartphone.
2) Other current and up and coming services on the VM server have "ask
Mark" as an instruction for appropriate resource allocation. It would
help if there were web-based interfaces for automatically claiming
resources for those services as well.
3) And for those who like to just configure existing stuff vs writing
new code, there will always be ongoing ways to improve/expand the list
of available services to members on the VM server -- interest in
working with me on that kind of system administration is welcome too.
Mark
