Ive done jtag hacks for 360 reading and writing custom NANDs, but it was all done following tutorials. So I can't say much about DVRs but it should be fairly similiar. If you can get a copy of a default firmware, and know the jtag spots on the mainboard you should be able to read the firmware with a basic LTP port, though it is the slowest solution I know. Unless someone's got a USB jtag reader.
