Is there any advantage to using one of these 800s over just using my $20 netgear?

For most people and most situations, no. Not unless you want to gain familiarity with Cisco equipment.

In the general case (MTS DSL or Shaw cablemodem), using a Cisco 800-series router for a home connection is just a huge pain in the ass compared to anything you can get at Future Shop.

On the other hand, if you're already a Cisco fan, and/or working towards a Cisco certification, then absolutely you should be running a Cisco router at home!
