If anyone is curious as to the motion sensor that appeared above the vending machine, see http://vendingmiser.com/ . It turns on the vending machine when there's people nearby, but also monitors temperature and compressor cycles to keep drinks cold. It cost $186.23 (and a bit of running around as the US sellers only offered UPS ground so I needed to manually clear it) and will pay for itself within a year.
